Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 3, 1958, this set captures The Dave Brubeck Quartet paying tribute to Duke Ellington with a program drawn almost entirely from Ellington’s repertoire. The inspired choice of Jump For Joy produces some of the concert’s most magical moments, while Perdido becomes an extended workout for Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck. Liberian Suite – Dance No. 3 offers a rare performance of one movement from Ellington’s 1947 suite, and Brubeck’s own composition The Duke stands as an elegant homage showcasing Desmond’s lyrical alto. The finale, C Jam Blues, spotlights Joe Morello and closes the set with energy and swing. This recording remains a compelling document of Brubeck’s admiration for Ellington and the quartet’s dynamic interplay on stage.
