X Clan emerged from Brooklyn as one of the most distinctive and politically charged hip‑hop groups of the early 1990s. The original lineup of Sugar Shaft, Paradise, Brother J and Professor X became central figures in the Blackwatch movement, a collective that also included artists such as Lin Que and Queen Mother Rage. Renowned for their Afrocentric vision, militant activism and unmistakable sonic identity, X Clan quickly rose to prominence. Their 1990 debut album To The East, Blackwards reached number 11 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip‑Hop Albums and number 97 on the Billboard 200, delivering standout singles including Heed The Word Of The Brother, Raise The Flag, Funkin’ Lesson, Shaft’s Big Score and Grand Verbalizer, What Time Is It. This reissue marks the album’s first appearance on vinyl since 1991, honouring one of hip‑hop’s most influential and culturally resonant releases.
